SYNOPSIS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in an ever-wider variety of contexts such as pre-filtering job applicants, assessing credit applications or supporting medical diagnoses. There are an increasing number of examples where such approaches have had unintended and potentially unethical consequences. For example (i) previously established recruitment/selection approaches can be reinforced potentially making decisions based on gender, race and age, and (ii) the ethics of AI usage can become questionable in applications involving autonomous vehicles and/or weaponry.

We have put together an experienced panel of experts to debate this topic in more detail, chaired by Dan Cope (DMSG vice-chair).

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

The panel members include:

Dr Beth Singler

Junior Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. Beth’s anthropological research explores the social, ethical, philosophical and religious implications of advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics. As a part of her public engagement work she has produced a series of short documentaries.

The first, Pain in the Machine, won the 2017 AHRC Best Research Film of the Year Award. Beth has appeared on Radio4’s Today, Sunday and Start the Week programmes discussing AI, robots, and pain. In 2017 she spoke at the Hay Festival as one of the ‘Hay 30’, the 30 best speakers to watch. She has also appeared at the Edinburgh Science Festival, Ars Electronica, IP Expo, and New Scientist Live, and has been interviewed by the New Scientist, Forbes, and the BBC, among others.

Dr Neil Lawrence

Inaugural DeepMind Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge. He has been working on machine learning models for over 20 years. He recently returned to academia after three years as Director of Machine Learning at Amazon.

His main interest is the interaction of machine learning with the physical world. This interest was triggered by deploying machine learning in the African context, where ‘end-to-end’ solutions are normally required. This has inspired new research directions at the interface of machine learning and systems research, this work is funded by a Senior AI Fellowship from the Alan Turing Institute. Neil is also visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield and the co-host of Talking Machines.

Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.

For overseas delegates who wish to attend the event, please note that BCS does not issue invitation letters.
